We create shapes, not sizes
An introduction to our system of shapes — and how to find yours.
Inspired by scholars such as Veronika Glitsch and the artist group The Rational Dress Society, we’ve decided to offer shapes, and not standardized sizes here at TUBU. And of course we had to rename them as well.
This might be confusing to some, as we’ve grown quite attached to the numbers and letters we decide are “ours”, i.e. the garments we take with us when we’re headed to a fitting room, a bit sweaty and uncomfortable.
We have four shapes in our apparel system. Each shape embodies four ”sizes” in one (in total more than 16 ”sizes”), due to the flexibility of the ribbed knit garment.
Our current shapes are:
Nelumbo Amanita
Papilio
Betula
These are the Latin names for the lotus flower, the fly agaric mushroom, the butterfly caterpillar and the birch tree — all beautiful shapes in nature that shift and transform, according to cycles of life and seasons.
Shapes
Nelumbo is the Latin name for Lotus flower. It represents our first shape — and would be the equivalent of a European size 32/34, but due to the flexible nature of the garment it can go down one size to 30 — and up one size to 36.
Amanita is the Latin name for fly agaric mushroom. It represents our second shape — and would be the equivalent of a European size 36/38, but due to the flexible nature of the garment it can go down one size to 34 — and up one size to 40.
Papilio is the Latin name for the butterfly caterpillar. It represents our third shape — and would be the equivalent of a European size 40/42, but due to the flexible nature of the garment it can go down one size to 38 — and up one size to 44.
Betula is the Latin name for the birch tree. It represents our fourth shape — and would be the equivalent of a European size 44/46, but due to the flexible nature of the garment it can go down one size to 44 — and up one size to 48.
We have to note that this is not a finished system. This is merely a start. If you cannot find your shape — let us know. We want to create garments for you and would love to get your measurements in order to continue on our path of inclusive design.
